Two men killed IPHC congregants

WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES: IPCH members want their 'leader' to be sacked, two members of the Mabopane branch were killed allegedly by the congregation.

Two members of the Mabopane International Pentecost Holiness Church (IPHC) in Mabopane have been killed allegedly beaten by other congregants in a fight for church positions.

The members argued over the position of Comforter (junior priest), currently held by Tshepiso Modise.

The anti-Modise camp wanted him to vacate the position accusing him of having appointed himself.

Two men, aged 44 and 40, were declared dead on the scene, according to a source.

“The congregation beat up the men after Modise was sent him to address them,” he said.

According to the source, one of the men was a close friend of Modise.

Police spokesperson Lolo Mangena said four men had been arrested and would appear in the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of murder, malicious damage to property and assault.

On Thursday, disgruntled congregants of the IPHC called for the all-male executive committee (exco) to step down.

Rekord has learned that a Daily Sun photojournalist Samson Ratswana, was allegedly attacked by members of the church.

When he arrived at the church to cover the fighting between congregants, a group of about 70 people attacked him shouting “journalist, journalist.”

Two metro police officers tried in vain to rescue him and were overpowered.

The SA National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) said Ratswana was assaulted for nearly half an hour. He was eventually saved by the arrival of an SAPS VIP protection unit officer.

Sanef commended the officer for saving the journalist.
