Sunnyside police hold safety talks with domestics
Sunnyside police, ADT and High Risk security launched a safety campaign for domestic workers to raise awareness of domestic crime.
More than 30 domestic workers took part in a crime-prevention campaign by Sunnyside cluster police, ADT and High Risk security in Groenkloof on Thursday to raise awareness of domestic crime.
Sunnyside police spokesperson, sergeant Asnath Malatsi said one of the key objectives of the campaign was to warn domestics against allowing strangers into the home.
“Domestic workers need to confirm with their employers before accepting a delivery. They also need to make sure that gates are closed at all times,” Malatsi said adding the campaign also encouraged the reporting of abuse and other crimes they witnessed.”
ADT’s community development manager, Maurice Malan said domestic workers had to be informed about safety.
“Criminals target domestic workers while homeowners are at work,” Malan explained.
He said several incidents in which criminals broke into a home, aware that the domestic worker was inside proved this.
“We had an incident where a domestic worker was going to put garbage in the dustbin and out of nowhere, she was pounced on by an armed robber who had hidden himself behind the dustbin,” Malan said.
He urged domestic workers to request a panic button from their employers so they could alert the security company in an emergency.
“We also gave them whistles so they can blow when a break in does occur, refreshments and snacks were also provided to the domestics,” said Malan.
