Two dogs poisoned in Kloofsig

German shepherd and Yorkshire terrier die within hours of each other after being poisoned.

Two dogs, a Yorkshire terrier and German shepherd, were poisoned in Kloofsig on Tuesday morning.

Owner, Thea-Mari Naude, said both died within hours of each other.

“Astro, our 2-year-old Yorkie, was barking at something while out in the yard,” said Naude.

“The next moment he ran into the house and was foaming at the mouth. We rushed him to the vet but unfortunately died.”

Naude said the veterinarian at the Monument park veterinary clinic said the poison used was aldicarb, sold as Temik.

It was put on a Vienna sausage.

A short while after arriving home from the vet, Naude noticed her other dog, Jacky, an 18-month old German shepherd was struggling to breathe.

He too died shortly after.

Naude believed Jacky also died of the same poison.

“It has been such a horrible morning,” she said.

Naude said her family had been victims of a break-in last week Thursday.

“Someone broke into the wendy house at the back of the property and stole a DVD player,” she said.

“We are scared that they will break in again. We just want other people in the area to be on the lookout for this poison as well.”

Tshwane SPCA spokesperson Korky Levenon previously said Temik was not available to the public.

“Only registered farmers can purchase it. The problem is the poison gets stolen from farmers, and used to poison dogs. The poison is easily purchased at any taxi rank.”

The poison resembled gun powder, and was highly poisonous, said Levanon.

“All it takes is ingesting less than half a teaspoon and any animal or toddler is more than likely to die a horrible, painful death with the nervous system being affected and death by asphyxiation.”

Lyttelton Crime Stop (LCS) spokesperson Loot van Dyk said dog poisoning was not common the LCS area.

Valhalla was also gripped by a dog poisoning epidemic in October last year, when nine dogs were poisoned in two months.
