Sport highlights 22-24 April

This weekend, offers enough action for sport fans in and around Pretoria but cricket fans can sit in front of telly to watch South African stars in the IPL.

Although the Bulls have a bye this weekend, there is still abundant sporting action to look forward to.

Cricket

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is beginning to gathering momentum and several South Africans will be back in action this weekend.

On Thursday, Dale Steyn will be the only South African in action when his team, the Gujarat Lions, take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

On Friday, the Rising Pune Supergiants, with Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel in their midst, play the Royal Challengers Bangalore who could feature AB de Villiers and David Wiese.

As usual there will be two games on Saturday. In the first, the Delhi Daredevils (JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock, Imran Tahir and Chris Morris) play against the Mumbai Indians, where Marchant de Lange is the only local. In the second, the Sunrisers Hyderabad play the Kings XI Punjab, where David Miller, Kyle Abbott and Farhaan Behardien could be part of the team.

Sunday’ action also consists of two games. Firstly Dale Steyn’s Gujarat Lions take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore (De Villiers and Wiese) and in the second game, the Rising Pune Supergiants of Du Plessis and Albie Morkel play the Kolkata Knight Riders with Jacques Kallis as coach and Morné Morkel as a player.

Rugby

The Blue Bulls play in the Currie Cup elimination tournament against the Golden Lions at the Alberton Rugby Club on Saturday at 15:00.

For those interested in club rugby, there will also be plenty of action in Pretoria in the Carlton Cup with the two old rivals battling as, Tukkies visiting Police. The new kids on the block, Dragons, travel to Rustenburg to play against Impala, while Centurion will host Naka Bulls. All Carlton games are scheduled for 16:00 on Saturday. Harlequins have a bye this weekend.

Athletics

On Saturday, road runners will all march to the south of the city again for the Forest Hill half marathon. Although the race is organised by the Enduro Athletics Club of Krugersdorp, it will take place within the boundaries of Centurion at the Forist Hill City Shopping Centre. Runners will have a choice between the 21.1km half marathon and a 10km road race, both starting at 06:00. The 5km fun run will start at 06:20. Enquiries: FJ van Dyk on 082-325-8960.

Soccer

For soccer lovers the Nedbank Cup returns this weekend, and two local teams will be in action. On Friday night at 20:00, SuperSport United will take on Black Aces at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville.

In the biggest game of the weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates clash at the same venue the next day (Saturday) at 20:15.
