Two appear in court for possession of fake banknotes

Njinwa Anyom (32), a Cameroonian national was denied bail while his co-accused, Angel Mashobane (26), a South African citizen was granted R3 000 bail on Friday.

A 26-year-old local woman and a 32-year-old Cameroonian man appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Friday morning, to face charges of possession of counterfeit money.

The Cameroonian was denied bail but the South African was released on R3 000 bail by regional Magistrate, Martinus van Wyk.

The two were arrested by the Sunnyside police for possession of R1.5 million in fake Randelas (bank notes) on Wednesday.

According to Sunnyside police spokesperson sergeant Asnath Malatsi, the crime prevention team was on patrol when it searched a Anyom who was driving a black BMW on the corner of Greef and Kotze streets.

“When police opened the boot, they found a black travel back and asked the him to open it. The police found two ribbons of R200 sealed bank notes and one ribbon of R100 notes inside,” Malatsi explained.

Malatsi said the police inspected the money and discovered it was fake.

“The man was asked where he stayed and he said he stayed at Chipewa flat in Sunnyside, so police drove there and found Mashobane in possession of more counterfeit bank notes,” said Malatsi.

Four ribbons of R200 bank notes and three ribbons of R100 notes were found in her possession.

According to Malatsi, the two failed to explain how they acquired the money.

The two will be appearing in court on Tuesday, 26 April.
