Respect for metro cops, respect for community

Dealing with metro cops at a roadblock should not be a cause for concern for law-abiding citizens. Know the dos and don’ts when getting pulled over at a roadblock.

Roadblocks often bring success in the fight against crime, says the Tshwane metro police.

The results included the recovery of stolen vehicles and criminals being caught with stolen goods, spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said this week.

“Metro-police don’t often receive the recognition when they are doing something positive in their communities.”

He asked motorists to be patient in areas where roadblocks were often set up.

“We analyse the different areas to see where the most problems are with regard to accidents and crimes such as motor thefts, etc. Then we deploy our teams to these areas,” said Mahamba.

“Visibility in the areas is just as important to prevent crimes and accidents.”

Mahamba reminded motorists to treat the metro police with respect and avoid confrontation.

“We are currently introducing new trainees to the system of policing and would appreciate cooperation from the public.”

In order for the TMPD trainees to “adapt to the system of policing”, they would often be stationed in residential areas near schools and businesses.

“They will be supervised by our more seasoned officers. We ask that members of the public work with them to assist in their training,” said Mahamba.

Spokesperson for Sinoville police station Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the metro and police remained active within their area in the north.

“If people feel that they have been unfairly treated by a police official or metro cop, they should always take it up with their superiors. We have an open door policy and our community remains very important to us.”

Van Dyk said if people stayed within the law they needed not fear getting pulled off the road by a police official.
