Police worried about illegal guns

Dube police have expressed concern about the growing number of illegal firearms in the community.

Dube SAPS have expressed their concern about the growing number of illegal firearms in Winterveldt and neighbouring communities.

Police spokesperson, Sargent Tembi Nowathe said every week, scores of people were arrested for possession of illegal firearms in the community.

She said the police had recovered more than 27 firearms since the start of this year.

On Friday, Dube police arrested a 23-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Mmakaunyane.

“We received a tip-off about a red VW Golf suspiciously driving around area,” she said.

The police searched the car and found a firearm Parabellum with a filed-off serial number, and one magazine and three live rounds.

“The suspect was arrested and a case of possession of firearm was opened,” she said.

“The police have worked tirelessly raiding homes and recovering these firearms.

“More than 35 suspects had been arrested and appeared in various courts.”
