Teacher accused of assault not yet charged

The Gauteng department of education said the teacher was still to face disciplinary action its investigation into the alleged assault was completed.

The teacher who allegedly assaulted an 11-year-old pupil at Nantes Primary School in Eersterust has yet to appear before a disciplinary tribunal, the Gauteng education department said.

The grade 6 teacher allegedly threw a piece of hose pipe to Winray Daniels’ face two months ago, leaving the child with a black eye.

Education spokesperson Oupa Bodibe said the teacher was still working at the school on a three month renewable contract.

He said the investigation into the alleged assault was completed.

“The district labour unit is in the process of submitting a request for charges [to be preferred against the teacher] to head office. The teacher has not been charged,” Bodibe told Rekord.

Winray’s mother, Raydene Daniels, said her son was doing fine after initially being afraid to return to school.

“My son is doing ok and he is still in her class. He is getting over this experience, though at first he was worried about returning to her class,” she told Rekord.

Bodibe urged teachers to avoid corporal punishment in schools as it could lead to dismissal and a criminal charge of assault.

“The department has over the past years, and continues to train teachers to identify and implement alternative disciplinary practices and procedures. Schools are empowered through the SoA Schools Act to develop their own disciplinary code.”
