Sport Highlights 6 – 8 May
Winter is fast approaching these days, but there is still some sports action to warm up this weekend for sports enthusiasts, whether they enjoy it in front of the TV or maybe go to the actual action.
The Bulls are still playing overseas and the IPL is still going strong in India, but in Pretoria schools sport will be the order of the day this weekend.
Cricket
There is still a month of IPL action left and this weekend cricket fans can look forward to plenty of action again.
* On Friday we start the weekend’s action with only one local player in action. In the game between the Sunrisers Hyderabad (no South African) and the Gujarat Lions, only Dale Steyn could be in action for the last mentioned.
* On Saturday, there are as usual two games. Firstly the Royal Challengers Bangalore, with AB de Villiers and David Wiese in their midst, will take on the Rising Pune Supergiants, where Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel could be part of the action.
Saturday’s second game is between the Delhi Daredevils (JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock, Imran Tahir and Chris Morris) and the Kings XI Punjab, where David Miller, Kyle Abbot and Farhaan Behardien are possible players. Look out for De Kock, who is in great form in India.
* Sunday’s action will start with the game between Marchant de Lange’s Mumbai Indians and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In the second game on Sunday coach Jacques Kallis’ team, the Kolkata Knight Riders, with Morné Morkel in their midst, takes on Dale Steyn’s Gujarat Lions.
Rugby
The Bulls is still on tour in Australia and they will again play on Friday morning. This time they take on the tough Brumbies in Canberra. The game starts at 11:40 (SA time).
* In the meantime the Currie Cup tournament continues in South Africa. The Blue Bulls, who struggled in their first two games, will travel to Port Elizabeth to take on the EP Kings. This game starts at 14:15 on Saturday afternoon.
* There will also be Carlton Cup club rugby action in Pretoria to look forward to this weekend. All the games should start round about 16:00 on Saturday afternoon. Police plays against Harlequins, Centurion will host Tuks and Naka Bulls will play on their home ground against Dragons.
* Lovers of schools rugby can look forward to a feast of action in Pretoria this weekend. The mighty Grey Kollege from Bloemfontein visits Pretoria this weekend to play against Affies with almost 30 teams.
On the Tuks Sports Campus (LC de Villiers Sportsgrounds) the finals of the Tuks Schools Series will also take place this Saturday. The first games start at 08:00 and 15 schools will be in action.
Athletics
The Pretoria Military Sports Club presents the well-known Jackie Mekler 25km race this Saturday. The race starts and end at the Pretoria Military Sports Grounds in Thaba Tshwane. Starting time is 06:00. The event also includes a 10km road race for those who do not want to take on the 25km race. Enquiries: Festus on 082-520-1865.
Soccer
After Wednesday’s local derby between Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaTuks, only one local team will be in action in the Premier soccer league this weekend.
SuperSport United takes on Polokwane City at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday afternoon at 15:00.
Next Wednesday, SuperSport United will be the first of the local teams to play in their next obligation against Black Aces, also at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. This game starts at 19:30.
Mamelodi Sundowns will also be in action next Wednesday. They travel to Johannesburg to play against Wits on the students’ home grounds. This game also starts at 19:30.
AmaTuks just can’t get away from their dangerous position on the log and next Wednesday they will dig deep to try to beat Polokwane City in the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Starting time is also at 19:30.
