Garsfontein fall short in Tuks school rugby series
A last minute penalty saw monument edge out Garsfontein with 39-36 loss in the 3rd/4th place playoff.
Hoërskool Garsfontein lost 39-36 to EG Janseen in the third/fourth playoff match in the Tuks-reeks school rugby series on Saturday morning at the Tuks rugby stadium.
The flying tries of Garsfontein’s Shaun Williams were not enough to secure the Pretoria side a third place in the Tuks-reeks.
Both teams showed intent early on with Garsfontein bossing possession in the opening 10 minutes. They found the first points of the game via a penalty but the boys from Boksburg scored the first try of the match.
Garsfontein finished the first half strongly with a 17-12 lead.
The second half was end to end excitement with tries scored left right and centre. With seven minutes to go, Williams made a clever sprint through left flanks to score his second try that put Garsfontein ahead after scores were levelled at 29 all.
EG Jansen responded swiftly with a try of their own to force the scores 36 all with only four minutes to go.
With 70 minutes of regulation time gone, a scrum infringement led to Garsfontein conceding a penalty and EG Jansen scored to put them three ahead and securing third place.
