School damaged as ANC meeting turns violent
A primary school in Stinkwater was vandalised on Sunday night when a fight broke out during an ANC meeting.
Shots were fired and a guardhouse torched when chaos erupted at an ANC meeting at Marotola Primary School in Stinkwater on Sunday night.
Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi confirmed that ANC members were having a meeting when a fight broke out between the party’s members.
He said police were not sure what had led to the fighting.
He confirmed that the school’s guardhouse was torched and the windows of three classrooms were broken.
He said police were investigating charges of incitement to violence as well as malicious damage to property.
William Raoleka, chairman of the School Governing Body (SGB), told Rekord that chaos erupted as two factions of the ANC began arguing before the meeting started.
“Shots were fired in the air and at the windows, and everyone started running for cover,” said Raoleka.
“Three classrooms have been left without windows. The teachers, the parents as well as the pupils are still affected. You cannot bring violence into the classroom. It is winter and the kids have to attend class in rooms that do not have windows,” he said.
Raoleka said he was present at the the meeting during the drama.
He said two men were injured and were taken to hospital. Several cars were damaged as the violence continued outside the school premises.
ANC Tshwane spokesperson, Tebogo Joala said he was still waiting for a report on what exactly transpired on the night and will only comment later in the day after being briefed.
