A petition calling for increased patrols by metro police around the Gautrain station in Centurion has been submitted to the Tshwane metro.
Ward councillor Clive Napier said he received multiple complaints from residents who were mugged around the station or had their cars broken into.
Napier blamed the crime on a lack of parking space for Gautrain commuters.
He said he supported the construction of the new parking area at the back of the station, but called for more security to keep commuters safe.
The new parking area currently under construction on a 42 810sq m plot next to the station will provide a secure space to park. The station currently has space for about 1 880 cars.
Gautrain spokesperson Kesagee Nayager said the Gautrain security’s jurisdiction was limited.
“While we do everything in our control to ensure the safety and security of passengers within the Gautrain premises, we have no jurisdiction to police the areas outside the stations and rely on the metro police and SAPS in this regard,” she said.
Nayager added that the new parking area was due for completion by April next year.
