Sport highlights 13-15 May
Cricket and rugby on TV or masters athletics and football at the various stadiums provide local fans something to look forward to this weekend.
As you wait for the final Bulls game on their tour of Australia, don’t forget there is more sporting action for you to look forward to this weekend.
Cricket
With only two weeks left in the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket series, the battle for places in the play-off games gets tougher.
Four South Africans could be in action in the first game of the weekend on Friday when Marchant de Lange, of the Mumbai Indians, could go up against David Miller, Kyle Abbot and Farhaan Behardien, of the Kings XI Punjab.
Saturday’s first game is between the Royal Challengers Bangalore featuring AB de Villiers and David Wiese, and the Gujarat Lions, where Dale Steyn is the only local mercenary.
The second game on Saturday is between coach Jacques Kallis’s Kolkata Knight Riders and the Rising Pune Supergiants, where Albie Morkel is the only South African player after Faf du Plessis returned home to nurse an injury. In fact, Albie could be up against his younger brother Morné Morkel who turns out for the Knight Riders.
On Sunday, Miler, Abbot and Behardien (Kings XI Punjab) could all be in action again against the only team without a South African, the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Marchant de Lange’s Mumbai Indians will be in action in Sunday’s second game against the Delhi Daradevils, where JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock Imran Tahir and Chris Morris could be part of the action.
Rugby
After their good start in Perth, the Bulls had a setback in Canberra against the Brumbies last week. To ensure the tour is a success, they will have to win against the Waratahs in Sydney this weekend.
The game starts at 11:45 on Saturday morning.
– The Blue Bulls are struggling in the Currie Cup and have yet to win a game. They will take to the field on Friday afternoon at 15:00 against the Pumas, who are also desperate for a win after a troubled start in the competition.
Athletics
On Saturday, The Hatfield Christian Church will present the Love Run (5km, 10km or 21,1km) race, which will start and end at the church at 551 January Masilela Drive in Pretoria East. Enquiries can be made to Erica Liversage on 078 245 8286.
– The 40th South African Masters Athletics Track and Field Championships, presented by Gauteng North at the Pilditch Stadium, starts at 07:30 on Friday and ends on Saturday evening at 17:00.
Soccer
This is the semifinal weekend for the Nedbank Cup.
On Saturday, SuperSport United meet Baroka FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville at 20:15 but earlier, Free State Stars host Orlando Pirates at Goble Park in Bethlehem at 15:00.
