Students demand security at bus terminals
Students of Tshwane University of Technology are demanding increased security at bus terminals as well as more frequent buses as they are tired of falling victim to crime.
The students of Tshwane University of Technology are fed up with the poor security at the Arcadia bus terminals.
According to them, they complained to the bus company a number of times but their pleas have apparently fallen on deaf ears.
The students said they were mugged or pickpocketed by tsotsis on a regular basis at the terminus.
“The bus company officials said they would address our concerns but is has been a year later and nothing has happened,” said Mapule Mokwalo, a third year finance student.
Bafana Mahlangu, a second year student at the Arcadia campus, said he travelled from Tembisa to attend a 06:00 class and while it was true that students were robbed, this was not the bus company’s fault.
“Students should take care of their belongings as I always look out for mine.”
Mahlangu however, admitted that security was necessary.
He said as it was almost winter it meant it got light later in the mornings and this heightened the possibility of muggings.
“The bus company should improve security to ensure the safety of the students,” he said.
Last year, students at the Pretoria West campus went on a five-day protest against the Mabopane bus company’s poor service.
They claimed there were no security guards at the terminals and the company did not supply enough buses so students had to wait for an hour for a bus.
