Brooklyn Police warn against perjury
Brooklyn Police say complainants were going to be asked to physically pointout of the crime scene as part of the investigation.
Brooklyn police have issued a warning against motorists who intentionally make false statements under oath.
Spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said any false cases reported to the police would result in action against the complainant.
He was referring specifically to motorists who claimed theft out of and of motor vehicles.
“Intentionally making a false statement under oath is a very serious offence. People who do this are not only abusing the police to solve personal problems but they are also taking police officers away from real investigations.”
Weilbach said complainants would be asked to physically point out the crime scene as part of the investigation.
“Often parking lots are equipped with CCTV cameras and footage will be viewed to confirm the crime.”
“Complainants are also requested to report crimes to the management of shopping malls so that they are aware of all incidents and so that they can take the necessary precautions to prevent crimes in their centres,” she said.
Vehicle related crimes were still a priority for Brooklyn police and proactive measures were put in place to address this, added Weilbach.
“Over the past two weeks four suspects were arrested for possession of tools to break into cars and two for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The Brooklyn police attribute these successes to the effective working relationship between the police and security companies in the policing precinct.”
Weilbach has also advised motorists to always be vigilant.
“All loose items must be removed from the vehicle before travelling. The safest place for any loose items such as handbags, cellphones, clothing and parcels is in the boot.”
“When locking their vehicles with a remote, motorists must not assume that their vehicles are locked. Drivers are advised to physically check whether the doors are locked before moving away from their vehicle,” she said.
