Crime at WiFi hotspots spreads to Ga-Rankuwa
Ga-Rankuwa police are warning residents to be cautious when using the Internet at WiFi hotspots.
Police have warned residents of Ga-Rankuwa to be cautious when accessing the Internet at WiFi hotspots in the area.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mathews Nkoadi said this week that crime at WiFi hotspots has spread to Ga-Rankuwa.
“Internet users in Ga-Rankuwa are increasingly targeted by criminals,” said Nkoadi.
Nkoadi urged residents to use safe areas when accessing the Internet on mobile devices.
“We have had an alarming number of cases reported to Ga-Rankuwa Police Station where complainants reported they have been robbed of laptops, cellphones and tablets,” said Nkoadi.
He said suspects were especially targeting pupils.
“Criminals are targeting pupils and women because they are the most vulnerable,” he said.
He said while police have increased visibility at the WiFi hotspots, it was advised that residents stop displaying their cellphones publicly.
“We advise residents to access WiFi in safe places such as restaurants, hospitals and schools,” he said.
