Fleeing motorist still missing after fatal accident
Police are still searching for a man who fled the scene after an accident that resulted in the death of another.
An unknown man is on the run from police after a fatal car crash in Pretoria north on Saturday.
A bakkie and a BMW collided on the corner of Daan De Wet Nel Drive and Theron Street around 09:00. Nearby residents alerted emergency services to the scene where the two cars were found.
Best Care ambulance services arrived on the scene to find two men trapped in the bakkie.
Spokesperson Xander Loubser confirmed that one of the men had died on the scene while the other had serious injuries. The occupants had to be extricated from the wreckage using force.
“Bystanders said the BMW driver ran away from the scene,” Loubser told Rekord.
Rumours on scene were that the BMW driver was a foreign national, and after he climbed out of the vehicle wreck, he was picked up by another car.
“Police are still searching for the missing driver,” said spokesperson for Akasia police Captain Riana van Aarde.
The identities of the deceased and the injured have not been made known yet, although it was rumoured that the injured was the son-in-law of the man who died. The cause of the accident will remain part of police investigations.
Last week, another fatal crash occurred in which a father of three died on the N1 north.
Deon van der Merwe (41) was driving home when a Volkswagen Polo, driving against oncoming traffic, collided with his bakkie.
The driver of the Polo died on impact and his identity was yet to be revealed.
