‘Vampire’ gets new lawyer
Damien Treeby, commonly refererd to as the 'Vampire' in the Anika Smit case, has a new lawyer.
Damien ‘Vampire’ Treeby has found a new lawyer to represent him in the Anika Smit death inquest.
On Tuesday, Treeby’s lawyer Sunette Potgieter excused herself from representing him in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court due to “certain circumstances”.
Treeby, a key witness at the hearing, will now be represented by advocate Corrie Nieuwenhuys.
Treeby was nicknamed ‘Vampire’ by the media after it was revealed in court that this was his username on the messaging app Mxit.
In September last year, Treeby testified that friends he had associated with at school introduced him to Satanism, and he had become interested in the occult world, searching the Internet for spells and rituals.
He admitted he had attended goth parties where a blood cocktail was served to guests and this blood could have been human.
He also said he saw guests injecting themselves with blood drawn from other guests.
Smit’s parents were not in court and the case was postponed to 19 July.
Smit was found dead at her father’s house in Theresa Park on 10 April 2010, her throat was slit and her hands were severed.
The police have said Treeby was a person of interest in relation to the murder.
