Hijacker arrested after attempting to flee on foot
A 32-year-old man was arrested in New Eersterust on Sunday, after hijacking a car.
A hijacker was arrested in New Eersterust, near Temba, on Sunday morning following a police chase.
Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said the 32-year-old man hijacked a white VW Polo Vivo in Maubane.
Police received information about the hijacked vehicle and started following up leads.
“The car was traced to Eersterust. When the man spotted the police, he started speeding. As police gave chase, he abandoned the car in the middle of the road and fled on foot. Police gave chase and managed to arrest the suspect,” said Moremi.
Moremi said the owner of the vehicle told police he was on his way to attend a funeral in Maubane when he was hijacked.
“He stopped along the way to ask for directions. The suspect approached his car, smashed the window with a firearm and instructed him to get out,” he said.
He took the car and left the owner stranded in the street.
The owner of the car then contacted the police.
The suspect will appear in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of hijacking.
