Police confirm death in Hammanskraal eviction
One person was killed by residents of Hammanskraal during an eviction protest.
Two people were confirmed dead during the Hammanskraal eviction protest on Monday.
Hammanskraal police cluster spokesperson warrant officer Sello Mangena said one person was burnt to death while another died after being hit in the head with a sharp object.
“No arrests have been made yet and the situation for now remains calm,” Mangena said.
Residents turned violent following the destruction of their shacks by the Red Ants security company and some municipal workers.
The Red Ants were sent to evict residents who had built their shacks illegally in Suurman, Kanana, Sekampeng and near the Jubilee mall.
But Yusuf Abramjee, spokesperson for CrimeStoppers International, tweeted about two deaths.

Moremi earlier confirmed that three buses were torched by residents.
No other deaths were confirmed.
An eyewitness wrote on her Facebook page that some residents were seen harvesting scrap from the burnt buses.
