Car thief in hospital after car theft attempt

“We are warning criminals, Sunnyside is not your playground. We will arrest you.”

A car thief ended up in hospital after he was hit by another vehicle in Sunnyside on Tuesday.

Sunnyside police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said the man and his friend tried to steal a parked blue 1400 Nissan bakkie outside a block of flats on the corner of Belvedere and Steve Biko streets.

“The one was trying to drive while the other pushed the car. Someone contacted the owner, who contacted the security guard at the flats,” said Malatsi.

“The security guard called for help and other people chased the two men. One thief escaped but the other was hit by a car while he tried to flee.”

Malatsi confirmed that the man was taken to hospital.

“He was in hospital and has since recovered. He remains in police custody. The police are still on the lookout for his friend,” she said.

Malatsi said lawbreakers should know that they would be arrested if they committed crimes in Sunnyside.

“The police are warning criminals, Sunnyside is not your playground. We will arrest you,” she warned.

The man is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
