Taxi driver charged for officer’s death
The driver whose taxi hit and killed a metro police is charged with culpable homicide.
The driver of a minibus taxi that knocked over and killed a metro police officer has been charged with culpable homicide and reckless driving.
The metro officer was hit by a taxi on the Mabopane Highway while directing traffic last Friday evening.
She was attended to and taken to hospital by Bestcare paramedics in a critical condition but died the next day.
Gauteng traffic spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo told Rekord on Thursday that the driver had been arrested.
“The driver was reckless and he was charged with culpable homicide. He is detained but I can’t confirm at which police station.”
“Court dates and investigations will be finalised in due course. It is very important for motorists to abide by the law in order to avoid such situations.”
Nxumalo said the officer was on duty on the highway when she was hit.
“The officer was from the East Rand and will be buried on Saturday.”
According to an eyewitness, Chris Batsane, the driver failed to stop when he was flagged down.
Batsane said he was driving behind the taxi when the accident happened.
“The officer went into the road and tried to stop the taxi but the driver didn’t stop and the officer was hit.”
“Paramedics were called to the scene and the officer was transported to hospital.”
Batsane said there were no passengers in the taxi.
