Silverton police maintain high visibility
Silverton police worked alongside other police stations to keep parts of east of the city safe.
Silverton police took part in Operation Paseka on Friday night, which carried on into the early hours of Saturday morning.
Silverton police officers worked alongside the Moot and Villieria police stations as part of the Tshwane Central police cluster to maintain high police visibility.
They targeted various crime hotspots alongside community policing forums and security companies ADT and Kilnerpark Security.
The aim of the operation was to combat and prevent serious and violent crimes in certain priority focused areas.
“Part of the operation was to stabilise hotspot areas in the cluster,” said Villieria police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits.
These areas included places where service delivery protests have emerged.
“Combating priority crimes such as cash-in-transit robberies and ATM bombings were also part of the operation,” said Brits.
Some of the arrests made included driving under the influence, being drunk in public, possession of drugs and being in the country illegally.
During Operation Paseka, Silverton police attended to an ATM bombing at a filling station in Pretoria Street.
“At about 24:15 on Saturday morning, three men driving a red Golf GTI bombed the ATM. Two men went inside the shop and pointed firearms at the staff,” said Brits.
There was one customer inside the shop who was taken into the shop’s kitchen with the staff.
“The staff and the customer heard gunshots inside the shop and thereafter they heard a loud explosion,” she said.
After about five minutes, when everything had quietened down, the staff left the kitchen and notified the police.
“Officers arrived on the scene quickly but the suspects had already gotten away,” said Brits.
Police could not yet confirm how much money was stolen but said the shop’s floor was littered with cash.
Brits commended the investigating officer on the scene, Captain Terblanche, for handling the situation very well.
One of the areas that was targeted by the Silverton police was Nellmapius township in the east of the city.
“Police mostly maintained high visibility in this area and we were especially on the lookout for drunk driving,” said Brits.
Parts of the Moot that were targeted included the notorious Melgisedek building as well as parks and brooks that were known hiding spots for illegal immigrants.
