Another white sangoma in Mams
Another white sangoma completes his training in Mamelodi.
Three years ago Callan Gazet-du-Chattelier of Silverton decided to train as a sangoma despite objection from this family.
Now, he is just one test away from qualifying and starting a new life of healing the sick, throwing the bones, solving people’s problems and reading their future.
This white, English-speaking 26-year-old will henceforth be known as Gogo Mahlasela. A name presumably chosen for him by his ancestors.
Gazet-du-Chattelier’s first experience with ancestral powers was when he visited a friend in Bela Bela where he witnessed a sangoma graduation and immediately felt drawn towards it.
He told Rekord that recurring bad dreams persuaded him to consult a sangoma who told him of his calling to become a sangoma.
“I was a bit surprised but understood, and in my heart and mind something was telling to go through with the process,” said Gazet-du-Chattelier adding that growing up, it had never occurred to him he would become a sangoma.
He said when he told his family and fiancé, they were against his chosen path.
Gazet-du-Chattelier is being trained by Gobela Lizbeth Mainde, also known as Gogo Dungamanzi of Mamelodi East, Extension 6 who has more than 30 years of training experience.
On 11 June Gazet-du-Chattelier took the final steps towards being a sangoma.
He drank animal blood, searched for and found the hidden mpande (bile) and the bag of bones to earn himself a name by his ancestors as the ritual demands.
He has visited the river to speak with his ancestors…to ask them for healing powers.
Gazet-du-Chattelier can speak seSotho which he learned while working as a contractor.
He said he believed he now had the power from his ancestors even though his family did not give him their blessing to be a sangoma.
And now he is left with one ceremony before he can go home to start his work as a sangoma.
Gazet-du-Chattelier said he had learned many things from Mainde that he needed to know about being a sangoma or traditional healer .
Gobela gogo Dungamanzi said Gazet-du-Chattelier was a good student whose ancestors were very happy with him and would guide him and protect him all the way.
