NATIONAL NEWS: America honours Black Coffee
Award-winning music producer Black Coffee walked away a winner at this years' BET awards.
Music producer and DJ Black Coffee made South Africa proud when he became the first South African music artist to win a Black Entertainment Television (BET) award.
Black Coffee won the BET Award in the ‘Best International Act – Africa’ category at the awards ceremony held in Los Angeles on Saturday.
He received the award for his successful album, Pieces of Me, which features newcomer Nakhane Toure.
In his speech, Black Coffee said: “For every kid in Africa who thinks they cannot stand here. In the words of Lupita Nyong’o ‘every dream is valid’,” he said.
Black Coffee thanked South African citizens for the support they have shown him over the years.
Rapper, AKA took to Twitter to share his feelings.
AKA tweeted: “As long as a South African artist wins this award. That’s fine by me.
“Regardless of how much my people belittle me … I will still rock that SA flag with pride on stage tonight … Always and forever.”
Later he added: “Look Black Coffee and me don’t dig each other but I respect him and his art. I acknowledge him for the pioneer he is.”
