Donation brings cricket to Grade R pupils
Grade R pupils kept busy on the cricket field.
Grade R pupils of Emasangweni Primary School in Mamelodi East will now have their own cricket club.
This came after the Gauteng Mental Health Aids directorate donated cricket equipment to the pupils recently.
Teachers and pupils were very happy with the donation.
According to Rebone Lentsoane, a social worker, the directorate realised that the school needed help and it decided to donate cricket bats.
The directorate is based at the school.
“We wanted to give back to the community and donating these bats was such a good thing. It makes us happy to see the children happy. We believe sport plays an important role,” said Rebone.
This will be the first year the Grade Rs play cricket and their teacher and coach Sylvia Mohlala said they were very excited.
“We are grateful to the directorate for what it has done for our children. Sports helps to improve the performance of children in class,” she said.
Mohlala said the school had offered cricket training for a while already and she was looking forward to seeing the children play.
“Cricket is a very interesting sport and I believe it is a good thing to start grooming these children at an early age,” she said.
Koketso Tholo (8), a batter who has played cricket for the past two years, said: “I love cricket because it keeps me fit and off the streets.”
