Hercules police are calling on residents to assist with chasing criminals away following escalating house robberies in Daspoort, west of Pretoria.
Hercules police spokesperson Bonginkosi Msimango said on Thursday Daspoort residents were invited to directly or indirectly assist in fighting crime.
“For crime to decrease, we at least need to have a coalition with the community. We have on a number of occasions pleaded with residents to report crime.”
“As much as it is our responsibility to chase criminals, we can only do it successfully if the community is fully behind us.”
Daspoort resident Monica Makgato told Rekord last week nyaope addicts lived opposite her home and it made her uncomfortable.
She said the nyaope users were responsible for crimes in Daspoort and police were doing nothing to chase the addicts away.
“They live just opposite my house and watch each and every movement I make. I live in fear and always make sure I leave someone in the house when I go out.”
“A few years ago, my home was burgled and equipment was stolen. I opened a case against them (nyaope boys) but no arrests were made,” she said.
It is believed the nyaope boys break in when homeowners had left for work.
Msimanga however, said he was unaware of the modus operandi.
“The community has to come to us and tell us about these boys.”
Msimango said fighting home burglaries will need a collective effort and not only police action.
“If more crimes are reported then we can investigate, which will help us identify the gangs behind these crimes.”
“We call on all community members to trust us and work with us so that we can find an effective way to eradicate crime.”
Ward councillor Elma Nel said on Wednesday the nyaope users made it clear to everyone they were not willing to work.
“They refused to work. People are bringing them everything they need. They do not have to work for anything. They simply declined everyone’s offer of getting them out of the bushes.”
