Centurion’s latest crime statistics paint a divided picture of the city, with some police precincts recording sharp increases in violent and sexual offences, while others saw significant declines in crimes such as residential burglary, carjacking and robbery.

The figures, released on August 28 by Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia in Hatfield, cover the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, from April to June 2026.

Across precincts serving Centurion and surrounding communities, the statistics show that crime is not moving in one direction.

The Wierdabrug precinct recorded some improvements, with attempted murder decreasing from seven to four cases and sexual offences declining by six cases. However, common assault increased by 21.4%, while common robbery rose from 20 to 32 cases.

Residential burglary declined by 3.7%, while robbery with aggravating circumstances fell by 14.5%. Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles also decreased by 7%.

The improvement in vehicle theft was offset by an increase in theft out of or from motor vehicles, which rose from 91 to 115 cases. Crimes detected through police action also increased, indicating heightened police activity.

In Lyttelton, contact crime increased by 2.7%, driven partly by a rise in sexual offences. Rape cases doubled from four to eight, while sexual assault increased from one to three cases. Attempted sexual offences also rose from zero to two cases.

Property-related crime, however, fell by 18.5%, with residential burglary dropping from 90 to 41 cases. Theft of motor vehicles and theft from vehicles also declined.

Crimes detected through police action increased by 11.3%, while arrests for driving under the influence reached 78 cases.

Olievenhoutbosch recorded one of the most concerning increases, with sexual offences rising from 16 to 26 cases.

Rape accounted for most of the increase, climbing by 11 cases to 25. Murder increased by two cases, while assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm rose from 85 to 93 cases.

There were also improvements, with carjacking falling from 52 to 38 cases and property-related crime declining by 17.1%.

Erasmia recorded a 14.1% decline in contact crime. Robbery with aggravating circumstances fell from 43 to 20 cases, while murder decreased by six cases. Carjacking dropped dramatically from 20 cases to one.

However, common assault increased from six to 14 cases and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm rose from 12 to 21 cases.

Laudium recorded the largest increase in contact crime, rising by 42.6%. Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 16 to 26 cases, while common robbery, common assault and attempted murder also rose.

Despite this, commercial crime, drug-related crime and residential burglary declined.

The figures highlight how crime trends differ significantly between Centurion’s precincts, with some traditional crimes declining while violent and sexual offences continue to emerge as key concerns in certain communities.
