Two notorious burglars rearrested

The two men from north of Pretoria were wanted for counts of house robberies

Two notorious Pretoria burglars were finally rearrested on Wednesday after they escaped from police custody in April.

The two men (between 26 and 32) were rearrested at Hartbeespoort, police said on Thursday.

Hartbeespoort police spokesperson Constable Alfred Npye said Patrick Moyo and Zacharia Chauke were arrested in Ga-Rankuwa and taken to Bethanie police station in the North West during April.

Npye said the suspects were wanted for various home burglaries around Pretoria for many years.

“In April this year one of the men was spotted in a taxi to Ga-Rankuwa and the police were immediately alerted. When he got off, police officers arrested him.”

“He led us to the second suspect who was found in Mmakau, near Ga-Rankuwa. Both suspects were taken to Bethanie police station, but they somehow managed to escape,” he said.

Npye said they received a tip-off this week that led to the recapturing of two burglars.

“The two suspects were traced and arrested at Hartbeespoort on Wednesday morning. We would like to thank everyone involved in the arrest of these men. The suspects are very dangerous to the community and measures will be taken to make sure they remain behind bars for a long time,” he said.

The two men were expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of escape from lawful custody.
