Tombstone for Mahlangu’s mother
The ANC unveiled the tombstone on the grave of Solomon Mahlangu’s mother, Martha Mahlangu, on Sunday.
Mama Martha Mahlangu’s tombstone was unveiled on Sunday at the Mamelodi West Cemetery.
The ANC also declared Mahlangu, who died in March two years ago after a long illness, one of the most respected women in the party.
Mahlangu was the mother of Umkhonto we Sizwe soldier Solomon Mahlangu, who was hanged by the apartheid government in 1979 when he was 22.
Among the guests at the unveiling were Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi, Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Minister of State Security David Mahlobo and Deputy Health Minister Gwen Ramokgopa.
The ANC also took the opportunity to campaign for the upcoming local government elections, inviting locals gathered to vote the party into power in Tshwane.
Speaker after speaker described Mahlangu as a soldier of the liberation movement that eventually ended apartheid in South Africa.
Family spokesperson Gideon Mahlangu said the local branch of the Congress of SA Students (Cosas) had approached the metro and the Presidency at the conclusion of this year’s Solomon Mahlangu memorial lecture in April to erect a tombstone to mark Mahlangu’s grave.
He thanked the mayor, the Presidency and Cosas as well as “other structures for the roles they played to make it happen”.
Mbete said mama Mahlangu fought for freedom and died a member of the ANC.
“She played a very important role of mother to ANC members, and women in particular.”
Mbete pleaded with the women at the event to follow in Mahlangu’s footsteps, to look out for younger women and society.
Ramokgopa said a street in the metro would be named after her to honour her legacy, and the metro would continue to change street names to reflect an inclusive society.
He described Mahlangu as a pillar of strength to the nation.
