Police pounce on armed robbery suspect
“They [police] briskly investigated the scene and evidence pointed to a residence in Mamelodi.”
Police have arrested a man linked to the armed robbery of a courier van in the east of Pretoria on Tuesday morning.
The courier company’s delivery van carrying boxes of cellphones and nappies was ambushed in Nellmapius by five armed men around 10:00.
“The men fled in a silver grey Amarok bakkie,” said Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato.
He said a quick response by the police led the investigators to a residence in Mamelodi two hours later.
“A silver bakkie matching the description of the vehicle linked to the robbery was found at a residence on Galena and Iodine streets.”
Sepato said a 24-year-old man found at the residence was questioned and it was later discovered the silver vehicle belonged to his father.
“Police contacted the father who arrived at the Mamelodi residence shortly after. He admitted he had lent his son the vehicle.”
Police searched the premises and at the back of the residence was an old white Toyota.
Sepato said inside the battered Toyota, police found boxes of cellphones and nappies believed to have been stolen from the courier van.
The 24-year-old was arrested.
He said investigations were ongoing.
“We are following every lead to arrest the four involved in the armed robbery.”
Sepato said the man would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
