Future superstar with a lot to say
“I too have things that I don't want to talk about but would rather sing about…”
“I too have things that I don’t want to talk about but would rather sing about. I feel people who listen to me can relate to my lyrics and feel the emotion of my vocals.”
This is what University of Johannesburg (UJ) accounting student Lesa Pearl Sefoka (19), from Mamelodi, aims to achieve with her music.
Sefoka, who has been singing from the age of seven, said she wrote her own music and although she hadn’t released any songs yet, she wanted to keep her material original.
“I’ve always been drawn to authentic performers and vocalists and I want to make music for people to relate to, to know they are not alone and make them feel good about themselves.”
“I believe as much as we have, a lot of artists in South Africa we still lack authenticity and that’s all I want to bring, that’s all that drives me.”
She said singing was a part of her life, “every time I get to do it, I light up and it’s the passion that inspires me”.
Sefako does gigs in Mamelodi at events such as the Bold Chefs’ Dining with the Chefs and her genre of music is Afro-pop and Afro-soul.
Sefako said she had only performed her song, Get Away, and the “vibe” she got back from the audience built her confidence.
“I believe I am talented, and I plan to work at being recognised as a performer and singer in South Africa and the continent as a whole.”

She advised other upcoming artists to be brave.
“Having a passion is the hardest thing in the world, but once you choose to be courageous and follow it despite what people say, you will be the happiest person ever.”
She said people needed to place bets on themselves as they were assured a positive outcome.
Sefako said she planned to start businesses and pursue her music.
She said she and a friend were starting a magazine in Mamelodi.
