Hawks officer wounded in shootout
The Hawks were greeted with a hail of bullets when they responded to a hijacking report on Sunday.
A Pretoria Hawks officer was wounded in a shootout in Mpumalanga on Sunday.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the police had received information about a hijacked BMW and using its tracking device, the Hawks members located it parked at a house in Kriel.
He said before the police could even enter the yard, they were fired at.
“With Special Task Force, Organised Crime, National Investigative Unit, Gauteng Flying Squad and the local police, the suspects were overpowered. One Hawks member was shot in the shoulder,” he said.
One of the hijackers was shot dead, two critically wounded and six suffered slight injuries during the exchange of fire.
Police confiscated SA National Defence Force bullet proof vests, commercial explosives, one R5 rifle, one R1 rifle, two R4 rifles, one AK47, a 9mm pistol, an LM rifle.
“We also confiscated three stolen BMWs, one stolen Isuzu bakkie and a Chrysler Voyager. The search of the suspects’ house is still continuing.”
The officer was in a stable condition at Emalahleni Private Hospital.
The arrested men, aged between 25 and 38, were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, car hijacking and attempted murder, Mulaudzi said.
