Be vigilant at ATMs, warn police
“The woman went to the bank in an attempt to stop the card. She was told money from her account had been withdrawn."
Police have asked the public to be extra vigilant after a woman’s bank card was stolen and cash withdrawn from her account in Centurion recently.
Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said a docket for theft was opened at the station after a woman was tricked into thinking her card was stuck inside the ATM machine.
Huma said the woman was attempting to withdraw cash from an ATM when her card got stuck in the machine.
“The woman went to the bank in an attempt to stop the card but was told money had already been withdrawn from her account.”
Huma said the police were investigating the matter.
“We [police] would like to remind the public to be extra vigilant, especially when money and bank cards are involved.”
She gave the following tips to help:
– When making a cash withdrawal, ensure the card slips smoothly into the ATM slot. If there seems to be an obstruction, do not force the card in,
– If the ATM does not respond after you have insterted the card into slot, contact your bank immediately without leaving the ATM,
– Never allow anyone to assist you make a withdrawal unless you personally asked for help,
– Put away withdrawn cash immediately, especially large amounts,
– If you need to make a large withdrawal, better make it from inside your bank,
– Always travel in pairs, especially when making a large withdrawal,
– Save your bank’s phone number on your phone, and call your bank immediately if you suspect something is amiss.
