App catches thief
A mobile security application led to the arrest of a thief in the Moot.
A mobile tracking application helped a security company catch a thief on Wednesday.
Kilnerpark Security caught a man in possession of stolen items in the Moot after a member of the public alerted a response team to the theft – using the KPS panic app.
“The thief had stolen electronic wares from a bakkie and was caught with the items on the corner of Ella and Manie Bredell streets,” said Ancelize van der Kooi of Kilnerpark Security.
She explained that the KPS panic app used GPS coordinates to pinpoint the user’s location.
“The community member saw the theft and simply pressed the panic button on her cell phone to alert the control room.”
The thief was quickly apprehended and handed over to Moot police.
Van der Kooi encouraged residents to download the KPS panic app from the App Store.
“This service is not limited to just your home – your family and friends can use this app when walking in the street, at a shopping mall… all the alerts will set off an alarm at the KPS control room.”
