Video: Hero’s send-off for slain officer
“No one deserved to die in that manner.”
An honourable send-off was held for an officer shot and killed in the line of duty in the north of Pretoria recently.
Constable Thulani Mdluli (32) was killed in Bushveld Road near Walters garage in Block B, Mabopane two weeks ago – while trying to stop a car suspected of involvement in a commission of a crime.
The funeral was at the Tladistaad cemetery in his hometown Mabopane at the weekend.
A family member who asked not to be named said it was an emotional ceremony.
She said no one deserved to die in that manner.
Mdluli is mourned by his two children, a girl (4), a boy (9) and his wife Emisang.
“He did everything for them, now they have to grow up without a father, in a society that already lacks exemplary father figures.”
She said the police marched through the cemetery carrying Mduli’s coffin in a South African flag, which was later given to the family.
Mdluli and another officer were in pursuit of a white Audi A4 when he was killed two weeks ago.
Police spokesperson Captain Ndivuwo Mulamu said the police had received information two occupants in a car were behaving suspiciously.
Mulamu said one of the culprits was armed with an R5 rifle and started shooting at the two officers as they approached the car.
She said Mdluli was shot in the head and died on the scene.
Moloisane survived and was transported to hospital for trauma counselling.
The two officers were stationed at the Mabopane police station.
A manhunt for the two perpetrators was launched, said Mulamu.
