Salt, flour and sugar is all that is needed for a Winterveldt man to create works of art.
Percy Maimela (31), a self-taught artist, said making art was his life.
“This is the only thing I know, it is my life,” said Maimela.
He told Rekord he used these items for his work because he used to work as a merchandiser.
“Working with food gave me the idea to start creating pictures and telling stories.”
Maimela, who only has a grade 12 education, said having no formal qualification did not deter him to succeed in life.
“I would not advise anyone not to pursue a formal education,” he said.
Maimela trains children and the youth who want to get into the arts through partnerships with schools in Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve.
“I work with children because I too was mentored by other artists in the township and that is how I harnessed my talent for drawing and painting,” said Maimela.
Maimela said he started drawing in primary school but made his hobby a formal occupation after he resigned as a merchandiser.
He said he owed much of his inspiration to his merchandising job.
“The experience I got working with food inspired me to think outside the box,” said Maimela.
Maimela’s work was mostly inspired by people in the media including television actors and struggle heroes such as Nelson Mandela.
