Donkey shooter charged

Animal cruelty culprit to face music.

The SPCA is to lay a charge of cruelty to animals against a man who shot a donkey six times in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

SPCA officials had to euthanise the animal when they arrived at the scene.

“We had to terminate the life of the donkey because it was badly injured,” said SPCA officer Mishack Matlou.

The man is known to both the SPCA and the donkey-owner’s family.

Owner Jack Motshabane said the shooting last Wednesday caught him by surprise.

“We were just stopped by this guy and before we knew it, six shots were fired at one of my donkeys. We tried all we could to save the animal.”

Motshabane said his family relied on the donkeys for income.

“I look after my donkeys. They provide for my family. This has hit me in the pocket.”

In another animal cruelty crime in Pretoria, a man was arrested in March after kicking a dog to death in Stinkwater.
