Police warning of crime at taverns

Theft out of motor vehicles on the increase.

Mamelodi West police were so concerned about theft out of motor vehicles in the area that they went to the Denlyn Mall to hand out pamphlets warning residents of the increase last week.

Several cases of this crime had been reported to the station.

According to spokesperson, Captain Johaness Maheso criminals targeted vehicles parked outside taverns.

“The vehicles are been broken into and valuables such as cellphones, laptops and handbags were stolen,” said Maheso.

Maheso said theft out of motor vehicles, assaults and robberies outside taverns and shebeens were frequently reported.

He said vehicles had also been reported stolen while the owners were having a good time inside the shebeen or tavern.

He further said it also emerged that patrons hurt each other with beer bottles and sharp instruments when fighting broke out at shebeens.

“Our aim at the Mall is to warn motorists to take extra precautions at shebeens and taverns to make sure they parked safely and also advised them to be careful at these places of entertainment,” said Maheso.

Tavern owners are also encouraged to make use of security guards to protect the property of their customers but most importantly, not to sell liquor to already intoxicated people.

Maheso warned motorists to be alert to ensure they did not become the next victim.

The police also encouraged tavern and shebeen patrons to report any suspicious person to the police by dialing 08600-10-111.
