Cops mum on elderly couple’s attack
Expert expects house robberies to increase.
No information would be released yet on an elderly couple who was robbed in Pretoria East last week, police said.
“We are still investigating and are therefore unable to provide more information,” said spokesperson Sergeant Jan Sepato.
Sepato said armed men gained entry into the couple’s Garsfontein house on Friday around 18:00 as the woman opened the door for her cats.
“The burglars forced their way inside the house and demanded money. They assaulted the couple and also attempted to rape the woman in front her husband, but she fought back.”
The suspects fled with two cellphones. It is not clear what else they took as the couple were injured and unable to speak, said Sepato.
Dr Johan Burger, a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, said he expected house robberies to increase.
The past three years had seen a 21-percent rise in this type of crime.
Burger said the next round of crime statistics, for the year 2015-2016, would be released by the end of this month or early in September.
He said burglars who raped their female victims did so to assert their power.
“They want to make their victims feel their sense of dominance,” he said.
The couple, both in their fifties, was admitted to the Pretoria East hospital on Friday. Details about their condition could not be obtained.
