Young woman robbed on street corner
“For a moment, I thought I was being kidnapped because of the way they approached me."
A young woman was robbed on a street corner while on her way home in Pretoria West at the weekend.
Lydia Shongwe (22) told Rekord on Tuesday that the robbery left her traumatised.
It happened on the corner of Cobult and Nikkel streets in Proclamation Hill on Saturday evening.
She said she was on her way home after work when a VW Golf stopped in front of her.
“Four men got out of the vehicle and grabbed my handbag,” Shongwe said.
“It contained my canon camera, cellphone, ID, keys, business cards, shoes, notebook, money, purse with all my cards.”
She said she feared for a moment that she was being kidnapped because of the way the men approached her.
Shongwe said she screamed for help but no one came out to help.
“I fought to keep my bag but the guys were too strong. One of them pushed me to the ground and took it. The four men got into the lime-green car and fled,” she said.
“I tried running after the vehicle to get the number plate but it was too dark. I only got a glimpse and it read in part: ‘4XL…GP’.”
The men looked like they were in their mid 20’s, Shongwe said.
“I would just like to warn people in the neighbourhood to be vigilant. This is not the first time that someone was robbed from the guys in a VW Golf.”
She said she reported the matter to the Pretoria West police but did not lay a charge.
Police spokesperson Bonginkosi Msimango advised people to walk in groups when moving around at night.
In June, a teenage girl was beaten and robbed at Cronje Park in Pretoria Gardens. A man got out of a VW Polo and demanded her cellphone and IPad.
The girl refused and pepper sprayed the robber’s face who retaliated by hitting her with a pistol on the back of the head.
The robber took her items and fled the scene with the car he arrived in.
