Woman in court for fraud

“The complainant started to inquire about her order and reported the matter to police."

A woman who was arrested for fraud of over R30 000 briefly appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said Roxanne van Wyk (23) appeared in court on Friday for defrauding a woman who wanted to buy nappies on the online classifieds and community website Gumtree.

“The victim deposited R32 735 into an account believing she was purchasing nappies from a company named NKE Babies.”

Selepe said the victim kept asking why she had not received any feedback on her purchase after she had made the deposit.

“The complainant started to inquire about her order and reported the matter to police. Through investigations police arrested Van Wyk in Montana on Thursday.

The docket will remain at the station for seven days due to several cases Van Wyk is believed to be linked to.

Police have strong reason to believe she was involved in other cases.

Selepe said police urged members of the public to beware of such fraudulent attempts where consumers have not met the person they are buying items from.

Criminals are using the online small ads sites to defraud consumers. On this matter it was fortunate that the suspect was traced, said Selepe.
