Police take back the east

Police are taking back the streets of Brooklyn from criminals, says station commander Brigadier Kushie Nair.
No fewer than 64 arrests were made last week, she said on Monday.
This sent a clear message to criminals that the police meant business.
“Compared to this time last year, there is distinctive decrease in crime, proving that we are making much needed progress,” she said.
“We cannot do this alone and need the public to report crime to the police.”
Nair said theft out of motor vehicles was as a major concern that needed urgent attention.
“We [police] have made substantial headway, reducing the incidence of this crime through visible policing.”
Spokesperson Colette Weilbach said last week’s arrests included 10 for shoplifting, 12 over drugs, five for possession of stolen goods and two for residential and business robberies.
“These arrests in operations throughout the east are a strong signal to criminals that crime will not prevail.”
Weilbach said the police were steadily succeeding in driving criminals out of Brooklyn.
She said an arrest for carrying an unlicensed firearm came from a tip-off.
“We [police] were told to be on the lookout for a blue Ford Fiesta linked to a number of business robberies in Pretoria West and Lyttelton.”
The vehicle was located in Sunnyside on Monday.
When police arrived on the scene, five men ran away and two got into a minibus taxi.
The police stopped the taxi and arrested two men aged 25 and 27 years old.
She said on Monday, a Menlyn Mall security guard caught a man for shoplifting, and when the police searched his vehicle, they had found items, valued at R4 000 hidden.
On Tuesday, a man was arrested for possession of a stolen laptop.
“A police officer was leaving the Brooklyn police station when a cleaner at the station notified him that two suspicious men running down Duxbury Road,” said Weilbach.
The officer immediately got into an unmarked vehicle and pursued them. The officer parked at an intersection and gave chase on foot.
One of the fleeing men was caught with a laptop hidden under his sweater.
It was later established the laptop had been stolen from a nearby business.
More arrests followed during the week.
A 29-year-old man from Eersterust was arrested in possession of stolen goods.
Weilbach said station commander Bigadier Nair, commended all officers for their good work.
“Nair said these arrests served as a warning to criminals that the Brooklyn policing area was not a playground for criminals.”
