Car remotes could jam gate remote frequencies

"Jamming the gate works the same way as jamming the car locking system.”

A Centurion security expert has warned that vehicle remotes in the area interfered with each other’s frequencies.

Security company T/A’s CEO Hermanus van Niekerk said: “What happens is, if anyone with a remote staying in Centurion for example, presses their remote to open the gate, it intercepts the frequency of another remote being used at the same time then both gates do not open.”

Van Niekerk said the criminals had caught on to this and thus were stealing vehicle remotes in Centurion to use them for jamming security gates or your vehicle’s electronic locking system.

“Jamming the gate works the same way as jamming the car locking system.”

Van Niekerk jamming was often used in hijackings.

“Criminals then come back later and use the same remote to open the gate to gain access to the home.”

The police are oblivious to this new robbery trick.

Sergeant Jan Sepato said: “At this stage, we are only aware of vehicle jamming tricks and have not received any complaints relating to the jamming of security gates.”

Roodepoort Rekord reported that jamming gates was spreading around Gauteng.

“Between 50 and a 100 residents of Wilro Park and Roodekrans awoke to a strange phenomenon last night,” Roodepoort Rekord reported.

Their electric gates all standing wide open and alarms going off.

According to Andreas Oberlechner of Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch, he and his patrollers had their hands full throughout that night, attending to one case after another.

The Rekord’s sister publication reported that the culprits were believed to have a frequency scanner with which they open the gates and set off the alarms.

The newspaper said the police in Roodepoort were also not aware of this trick.

Van Niekerk said people needed to be alert in order to minimise the risk of becoming a victim.
