Sport Highlights 16 – 18 September

It’s spring and braai time in Pretoria, but whether the Springboks give their fans reason to toast them will only be answered on Saturday morning.

Can the Springboks achieve a miracle this weekend, and get their campaign in the Castle Rugby Championship on track again?

Rugby

Springbok rugby are in deep trouble and Saturday’s test match against the All Blacks could be a watershed event for Allister Coetzee’s team. The game starts at 09:35, and will take place at the AMI Stadium in Christchurch.

Meanwhile, the Currie Cup competition’s playoffs are now fast approaching. The Blue Bulls play their second last game in the league phase this Friday, against Griquas at 19:00.

Cricket

While the Proteas prepare for their one-day match against Ireland, which is scheduled for next Sunday in Benoni, cricket fans will have to be satisfied with the action in the African T20 series. The local team, Northerns, is playing against Northern Cape in Oudtshoorn this weekend.

Soccer

The Premier League is going strong again but there are no games in this league this weekend. The first bunch of games were played on Wednesday, while other games are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

This weekend two games will be played in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge. Bloemfontein Celtic take on Maritzburg United at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo, east of Bloemfontein at 10:00, while Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town will clash at the Dobsonville stadium at 12:00, both on Saturday.

Athletics

Pretoria Marathon Club (PMK) will once again present the popular Andrew Greyling road race on Saturday, at the Brooklyn Square/Mall, east of Pretoria. The route of all three distances (21.1km, 10km and 5km) is meandering through area Brooklyn and Waterkloof, a relatively flat and fast route.

The 21.1km and 10km runners and walkers will start at 06:00, followed by the 5km fun runners at 06:10. Enquiries: Bert van der Raad on 082-922-6817.
