Teen and friend burnt to death

A 18-year-old man and his friend were burnt to death during a mob justice incident in Atteridgeville.

An 18-year-old and his friend were burnt to death in a mob justice incident in Atteridgeville West on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi said the incident happened around 23:00, in the Phomolong informal settlement.

“Police responded to a call after they were told about a potential mob justice taking place. Upon arrival, their vehicles were stoned and forced back,” he said.

“The group assaulted the two men and set them alight before running away.”

Mufamadi said the two young men had already died when police came, and the motive of the killings was unknown.

Two cases of murder were opened at the Atteridgeville police station, he said.

“We are appealing to the community to help us find the suspects.”

Mufamadi also pleaded with residents to never to take the law into their hands.

“If you catch someone indulging in a criminal activity, call us [the police] and we will arrest him,” he said.
