Man linked to Anika Smit death in custody
“Smit was raped, murdered and her hands cut-off.”

A man handed himself over to police on Saturday for the murder of 17-year-old Anika Smit, who died in 2010.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said a 24-year-old man handed himself in at a Pretoria police station on Saturday.
Although Dlamini would not say which police station the man handed himself into, he did say he would be appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
He confirmed the man was in police custody and said the investigation was ongoing.
The grade 11 pupil from Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz, Pretoria North, had been raped, her throat slit and her hands cut off in the brutal attack at her home.
At the time, Smit’s boyfriend Nico Venter was accused of the murder, but charges against him were later withdrawn.
In November 2014, the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court ordered a formal inquest into the murder, where it was expected that Smit’s father Johan and her boyfriend Nico Venter would testify.
A pupil who showed interest in satanic spells was questioned twice by police a year ago for having scratches on his back and missing school the same day the teen was discovered murdered.
At the time, investigating officer Major Mike van Aardt said there were no accused in the matter but only parties of interest, including the 17-year-old victim’s mother Charlotte Eksteen who was not expected to testify.
