Illegal connection found in Capital Park
If you a found guilty of making illegal connections you will be fined.
Illegal electrical connections were found at an electrical box on the corner of Paul Kruger and Malherbe streets in Capital Park, Moot last Wednesday.
DA councillor Elma Nel received the tip-off and informed an employee at Prince’s Park energy and electricity depot about the breach.
According to the employee, who wanted to stay anonymous, someone was sent out to remove the illegal connection shortly after the case had been reported.
He said his biggest concerns were the dangers involved with illegal power connections.
“My main concern regarding these unlawful connections is the safety aspect. You can so easily electrocute yourself or even electrocute others.”
“And then there is also the unlawful use of electricity, this is a loss for the city council,” he added.
The employee said there was severe punishment for people caught using electricity illegally.
“If you are caught or we were able to track the illegal connections back to you, you will pay for it. You will have to pay up, you will not go unpunished,” he said.
“What we then do is to follow it up as soon as possible and if there are connections that are not from us we remove it and then inform credit control who will track it to our system and fine the guilty party,” the employee added.
According to Elma and the employee most cases of illegal connections were reported by pensioners or people at home during the day.
She urged residents to report any suspicions or illegal connections.
“If you notice neighbours or people you don’t know who are not wearing city council uniform tampering with electrical boxes, report it immediately. “And thank you to those who are already doing so,” she added.
Suspected illegal connections can be reported to ward councillors or at 012 358 9999. When contacting Tshwane metro ask for a reference number which ward councillors could use to follow up. Illegal connections can also be reported to 012 358 3012.
