Shootings on the rise in Eersterust
Kaye said residents met last Thursday and on Monday afternoon to pray for an end to the shootings.
Residents of Eersterust no longer feel safe in their homes.
Their anxiety follows a second shooting in the area within a week.
On Saturday Vincent Catwright was shot dead in Waltloo, south of Eersterust.
Last Tuesday afternoon, a seven-year-old boy was wounded by a stray bullet.
According to a witness, Bernice Kaye, the boy was playing in his backyard around 13:00 when the bullet grazed him.
“He was only slightly injured.”
His grandmother said the family had been referred for trauma counselling.
Kaye added that the shooters were after resident Terverner Hartze, who had been targeted on numerous occasions before.
“His home is riddled with bullet holes. The police have launched a manhunt for the shooters,” spokesperson Sam Shibambo said, adding that several shots had been fired at a house in Andrew Gordon Street.
“The police was called to the scene and a search was issued for the suspect’s vehicle. The vehicle was located at a house in Luluberg with several bullet holes,” Kaye said.
It was alleged the shooters had been driving a maroon Opel Corsa.
No one has been arrested but the investigation continues.
“This has been the sixth random shooting in Andrew Gordon Avenue and the second person who got shot accidentally,” Kaye said.
She added the shootings have worsened over the past two months.
“We no longer feel safe in our own homes,” she added.
Eersterust CPF member Henrie Godfrey said: “This has really become a worrying issue in Eersterust.”
“We are urgently looking for a solution.”
Kaye said residents met last Thursday and on Monday afternoon to pray for an end to the shootings.
“Members of the Eersterust Parents’ Association and senior police officers also attended,” she said, adding that the prayers would continue until the issue is resolved.
The police are calling on residents with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the Eersterust police immediately.
The police could not be reached for comment about Catwright’s murder.
