A Mamelodi family dreads the day security guards will leave the area after their new RDP home was petrol bombed.
The Mahlangus, who were among the 74 families to receive RDP houses in Mamelodi East extension 5 recently, said a petrol bomb had been thrown into their home last Tuesday night and they were scared of that it will happen again.
Red Ants security has been on patrol in the area to prevent the land grabs by angry residents witnessed in and around Mamelodi since last month.
Home owner Jane Mahlangu (53) said her son was in the kitchen around 20:00, when he heard a window was smashed.
“When he went to investigate he discovered that a petrol bomb had been thrown into one of the rooms which was on fire,” she said.
She said luckily her son was all alone in the house and was able to quickly put out the fire.
She said Red Ants guards, attracted by the fire, ran to help and the attackers ran away.
No serious damage was done to the house.
She said she believed that the attackers stayed nearby.
She said she had applied for a RDP house in 1999.
“We immediately reported the matter to the police and they came the following morning to take the statements.”
The family said they were still waiting for the case number from the police.
“The police need to do something soon because sooner or later the Red Ants will vacate the area… we fear for our lives.”
Mamelodi East police spokesperson, Captain Michael Mbewe said the police had gone to the home, but he could not confirm a case had been opened.
“I believe that the case might have been opened by the owner’s son,” said Mbewe adding an investigation would establish that.
The Mahlangus were given the keys to the house by the newly appointed MMC for human settlements Mandla Nkomo two days before the attack.
